At-Home Colored Hair Care Guide

Many of our routine tasks are taken for granted, especially considering how much COVID has affected our routine. Simple self-care like getting your hair done or a trip to the nail salon for a mani/pedi has become risky, so we’ve had to adjust and do the best we can at home. As the year progresses and the US sees an increase in cases of COVID, it is important, even more so now than ever, to stay at home. This calls for readjusting our routines to make it at-home friendly. Learning how to dye and care for colored hair without leaving your home is a very fruitful experience that will save you gas, time, and money!

Natural Hair Dye

Before reaching for the semi-permanent and permanent hair dyes, why not look into natural alternatives first? It’s low-risk because there is little damage, and if you end up not liking the color, it can be changed! One of the first recommendations for natural hair color would be to use henna as a hair dye. A staple in Indian beauty, you can find henna for your hair in Indian stores, or buy henna powder online for pretty cheap. The great thing about henna is that it’s made from henna leaves, and leaves your hair with a natural red tone. This adds dimension to grey hairs and boosts shine. If you want a different color, there’s also black henna to tint hair a deep black color. A hack we love is using black henna to naturally tint your brows, so they look filled in a frame your face for weeks. We do emphasize the need to let the henna wash out or to let your hair grow out before attempting to use regular hair dye, as the henna can really stick to the hair cuticle and result in uneven coloring.

Less Damaging Dyes

If you want to try a funky color at-home, then we would recommend using semi-permanent hair dyes. If the damage from bleaching is your issue, there are new types of hair dyes that are designed to be applied over natural hair (meaning no bleaching required).

Colored Hair Care

No matter what product you reach for, the after-care will determine how quickly your hair heals from that damage. Especially if you’re opting for permanent hair color options (over using something like henna or semi-permanent hair dye) as the damage on the hair cuticle and shaft are both amplified. To rinse out the hair dye and clean + hydrate weekly, use WOW Skin Science Coconut Milk Shampoo & Conditioner as your nourishing hair duo. Ultra moisturizing coconut milk, castor oil, aloe vera, and more replenish the hydration lost during the hair dying process. This is key to seal split ends, smooth cuticles for less frizz, and boost shine.

One of our favorite hair health boosters is using hair oils as a pre-wash treatment. Massage into your scalp and strands at least 30 minutes before you wash your hair. Better yet, leave it on overnight to give your hair more time to absorb. WOW Skin Science offers multiple plant-powered hair oils to hydrate your strands. WOW Skin Science Onion Black Seed Hair Oil features Ayurvedic staples to rejuvenate hair health. Our 10-In-1 Hair Oil nourishes your strands to fight frizz and seal split ends! WOW Skin Science Castor Oil is a multitasking miracle to provide essential moisture that’s stripped from bleaching and hair dyeing.

To hydrate on-the-go, use WOW Skin Science 10-In-1 Apple Cider Vinegar Mist Tonic as a leave-in treatment. It has all the added benefits of a moisturizing tonic, with the balancing benefits of apple cider vinegar. It’s a must-have to reinvigorate your strands, refresh dry hair, and boost shine.

Hair Health is Important

Regardless of your hair journey, outside irritants like pollution and UV rays will worsen your hair’s health. Especially if you already have damage from constant hair dyeing, bleaching, and heat styling. As the year progresses and COVID cases continue to rise, we really recommend you to stay home as much as possible and to do your routine activities, such as getting your hair done, at home. You may surprise yourself with how easy it is to do self-care at home!
